Did NOT want to do this - but getting way too many spam and bad chinese comments that go to bad websites - so unless someone can tell me how to block them or get rid of them - i think this may be the only option!

Usually the word verification thing keeps most of the spam away, but you already have that so I don't know what would fix it besides going private.
One alternative is to make it so you approve the comments (via email) before they are posted.

i get some crazy chinese comments too, but i never click on any links, just delete them. but yes, the person who said to have you approve all comments before they are posted is a great option. private blogs are ANNOYING! don't do it! it's hard for people to check them often because new posts are not updated in bloglines or google reader!
